WHAT IS JUST GROW?
Just Grow is Just Food’s community gardening initiative, bringing people together to grow fresh produce, share skills, and build a stronger, healthier Douglas County. The program provides space, tools, and guidance for gardeners of all skill levels—helping neighbors feed themselves, their families, and the wider community.

Right now, Just Grow maintains 20 community plots for individual gardeners and 12 pantry plots dedicated to growing food for Just Food’s pantry. These gardens are already producing fresh fruits and vegetables for neighbors in need, with more harvests to come before the season ends.

Just Grow is also home to the Native Edible Plant Landscape, developed in partnership with Native Lands Restoration Collaborative. This groundbreaking project—believed to be the first of its kind in the nation—features 18 native plant species, including edible and medicinal varieties, planted across the Just Food campus. These gardens will not only provide food, but also restore biodiversity, honor Indigenous agricultural knowledge, and create a living classroom for the community.

Through hands-on gardening, food access initiatives, and educational workshops, Just Grow is planting the seeds for a more resilient, connected, and food-secure future.

GARDEN NEWS
Just Food Collaboration with Native Lands Restoration Collaborative
The Just Grow Community Food Project is a pioneering collaboration led by Just Food and Native Lands Restoration Collaborative. Together, we are transforming the Just Food campus into a living, learning, and healing landscape that redefines how communities engage with food, culture, and health. This innovative project combines an edible native landscape with a medicinal native plant garden, creating one of the first integrated installations of its kind at a food bank in the United States. Rooted in traditional ecological knowledge and community-based education, Just Grow seeks to empower families—especially children—with access to healthy, culturally meaningful foods and plant-based wellness practices. What We’re Growing — and Why It Matters Edible Native Landscape In collaboration with Native Lands Restoration Collaborative, we’re cultivating a vibrant garden of native fruits, nuts, and greens, including serviceberries, pawpaws, wild plums, hazelnuts, and more—foods traditionally used by Indigenous communities. This space serves as: A free, year-round food resource supporting children's nutrition An outdoor classroom for hands-on learning about growing, harvesting, and healthy eating A cultural bridge, honoring Indigenous foodways and fostering respect for local biodiversity A model for sustainability, using low-water, low-maintenance native species that support pollinators and ecosystems Medicinal Native Plant Garden The project also includes a dedicated plot for native medicinal plants—species long used for their healing properties. These plants will: Support education around holistic health and wellness Connect visitors with Indigenous healing traditions Provide another layer of engagement and cultural learning for youth and community members A Model for Change Just Grow is more than a garden—it’s a replicable model for how food banks and community organizations can blend nutrition access, cultural education, and ecological stewardship. It is: The first edible native landscape at a U.S. food bank A hub for intergenerational learning A bold step toward food sovereignty and community healing Our Vision Through this living landscape, we are growing more than food—we are growing knowledge, pride, resilience, and connection. The Just Grow Community Food Project is a commitment to nourishing bodies and spirits while building a healthier, more equitable future rooted in cultural respect and sustainability.

Just Food Community Garden Expansion
At Just Food, our mission is to empower individuals and families to grow their own food, cultivate healthy eating habits, and foster a deeper connection to the land. Through our community garden, we provide access to fresh, healthy food and offer a space for learning and community building. As we expand our garden, we aim to increase access to gardening opportunities, further strengthen our commitment to sustainability, and deepen our impact on the community. What the expansion means for the community: With the expansion of the Just Grow garden, we will increase the number of available garden plots, allowing more community members to grow their own food. The expansion will also include ADA-accessible beds to ensure that individuals with mobility limitations can participate in gardening. Additionally, a dedicated outdoor classroom will offer hands-on gardening education for people of all ages and skill levels, providing valuable knowledge to grow food sustainably. This expanded garden will continue to support our local food pantry, with several beds dedicated exclusively to pantry production, ensuring that fresh, healthy produce is available to those in need. Inclusive and accessible gardening: To ensure that all community members can take part in gardening, the expanded garden will include ADA-accessible raised garden beds. These beds are designed to be accessible to individuals with mobility limitations, offering a comfortable and inclusive space for everyone to grow their own food. Educational opportunities for all: The expansion will also bring new educational opportunities for community members. Through our outdoor classroom, we will host gardening workshops, hands-on demonstrations, and classes on topics ranging from soil health to sustainable growing practices. These sessions are designed to empower individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to grow their own food at home. Supporting local food security: As part of our expansion, several garden beds will be dedicated exclusively to producing food for the Just Food pantry. These beds will help provide a steady supply of fresh, nutritious produce for individuals and families facing food insecurity in our community. By growing and donating food locally, we continue to strengthen our commitment to food justice and ensure that everyone has access to healthy, locally grown food.
